Wendy Davis hit back at the Dallas Morning News piece this morning that blew her “struggling single mom” cover by … attacking Greg Abbot.

“We’re not surprised by Greg Abbott’s campaign attacks on the personal story of my life as a single mother who worked hard to get ahead,” Davis said in her statement. “But they won’t work, because my story is the story of millions of Texas women who know the strength it takes when you’re young, alone and a mother.”

On Sunday, the author of the piece said, as part of a Twitter thread, that “in researching, I talked to no — zero — Abbott people.”

But that’s just it, it’s not her personal story of life as a single mother. Sure, it’s the story of some mothers, just not Wendy Davis. Working for your dad’s business and having your second, six-figure-making husband foot the bill for your Harvard education while he raises the kids and you skip the state doesn’t fit the “struggling single mom” persona that Davis spent all these months crafting. I also hardly doubt there are even ten women in Texas, much less “millions” who claim the hard life of an unsupported single mother while not actually having custody of their children.

Davis can be angered that her cover was blown, but she can’t be angry that a story which was never hers was criticized as such.

*Here’s an account of a single mother who raised four children while serving our country. Maybe Sen. Davis could learn from her.

*Edited to add: the real single parent in this is Davis’s ex husband.
