When Mary Shelley created the horror genre by writing about Frankenstein’s monster she wasn’t just writing a horror tale, she was laying out an indictment of society. Much in the same way that Superman indicted humanity as fragile creatures by dressing as them in his rat race suit and glasses, Frankenstein’s monster was an condemnation of the evils society creates. I thought about this with the Reynolds High School shooting this morning and this awful story, which also makes me weep for humanity.

We have created a world where we teach teens that children are choices and we absolve ourselves of our moral abandonment by blaming everything else: video games, guns, movies, music—and then are shocked when the results of these teachings hurt us.

We have individuals, conservatives even, who think that they must be quiet, to go along to get along and not challenge each other over issues of faith, morality, principle. To Bible thump for a moment, I try as best I can as an imperfect, flawed human, to follow the example of Christ, who most certainly didn’t go along to get along. If you’re hated by all the right people for standing up against the erosion of morality in society, then you’ve accomplished something. We need more people unafraid to be hated for the right reasons.
